Welcome Statement from the Dean of the Faculty. As Dean of the Munich School of Management at LMU Munich it is my pleasure to welcome you to the webpages of our Faculty.
Since its foundation, the Faculty has been among the top institutions for management studies in Europe. We have been pursuing our goal of contributing to the development of our discipline through excellence in research and teaching ever since. Indeed, our Faculty ranks near the top of many university rankings for good reasons. We are not only part of a modern and internationally renowned university, but also part of a long tradition. As diverse as LMU is with its 18 faculties, our pride in being part of a history dating back almost 550 years unites us all. Since its foundation in 1472, LMU has been an institution that has made a difference in both research and teaching despite several periods of political and economic instability. Simply strolling through LMU’s historic campus gives you the unique flair of this university.
THE FACULTY. Our prestigious full professors, honorary professors, junior professors as well as our research and teaching assistants are the cornerstone of our excellent teaching program and our strong research reputation. In addition, our faculty features several Centers of Excellence and other academic institutions with whom we collaborate in both teaching and research activities. We group our teaching and research activities into eight subject areas, or clusters: Accounting, Finance & Insurance, Marketing & Strategy, Technology & Innovation, Information Systems & Digital Business, Leadership & Human Resources, Human Resources & Management and Health Care Management. Our subject areas thus cover both well-established as well as emerging areas of management studies.
In our research and teaching we highly value international ties networking and close collaboration with industry. The combination of Munich’s international setting and its local roots makes for an attractive environment for our students and researchers.
RESEARCH. Our Faculty is consistently ranked among the top institutions in German-speaking countries for its research performance and is internationally recognized for its cutting-edge research. This status is confirmed by numerous top-ranking publications and the high-profile positions of our Faculty members in academic associations, committees and editorial boards, but also by an ongoing dialogue with industry partners, from blue chip companies to startups. Through our cooperation with industry partners we translate our research insights into a business context and contribute to the development of the field of management research. In addition, we maintain a regular dialogue with renowned international visiting scholars. Most prominently, our LMU Center for Advanced Management Studies (LMU CAMS) has so far attracted over 200 outstanding visiting researchers.
TEACHING. Our Faculty is one of the go-to places for people who strive for academic excellence and top positions in academia or industry. Our Faculty has an excellent and comprehensive teaching profile that ensures knowledge that has high practical relevance, both at LMU and at our global network of prestigious partner universities. Examples of our work linking theory and practice include our new undergraduate lecture series featuring keynote speeches from industry representatives and the project courses for Master’s students working closely with local businesses.
Supporting young researchers is of huge importance for us. Our post-graduate Master of Business Research (MBR) program is a pre-requisite for our doctoral candidates and has a strong emphasis on many aspects of high-quality research. PhD students attending MBR courses are taught a methodological foundation for high-quality management research. In addition, the program aims to equip our researchers with transferrable skills for a career in academia.
We constantly aim to refine our educational profile and offer innovative training concepts. In this context, I would like to mention our new Master’s program “Media, Management and Digital Technologies” (MMT) which aims to prepare students for managerial roles in a digital environment. The program is taught jointly by both our Faculty and the faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics.
I hope to have sparked your interest in our Faculty. You will gain more insights about us on our web pages and our brochure “Munich School of Management Magazine”. I look forward to welcoming you personally at our many Faculty events.
